The following article explains the introduction of new frameworks in regard to renewable energy installations in Italy according to the official decree. On July 14, the Senate renewed its confidence in the Government by definitively approving, in the text dismissed by the Chamber, the bill for the conversion, with modifications, of the Decree-Law no. 50 of
Here follow 6 questions Green Dealflow asked Enerpoly, an innovative company trying to put zinc-ion batteries on the table of energy storage technologies to foster the energy transition and diversify the need for critical minerals required for lithium-ion batteries. 1. What is the Enerpoly innovative perspective on zinc-ion energy storage? Enerpoly develops and manufactures zinc-ion
High prices, rising costs, economic uncertainty, energy security concerns, and climate imperatives amount to a powerful cocktail of factors bearing on global energy investments.  IEA´s tracking and forecast estimate that global energy investments are expected to rise 8% in 2022, reaching around 2.4 trillion. However, around 200 billion is being driven up by higher costs
The global solar PV supply chain has seen a big shift in geographical hubs in the last 10 years with Europe, the USA, and Japan being overtaken by Chinese production. In 12 years, the PV cells global manufacturing capacity jumped from almost 25 GW (2010) to more than 220 GW (2022), with China currently weighing up
The Italian authority has published the formal general guidelines regarding agrivoltaics. This document was developed and published within a working group coordinated by the ministry of ecological transition – the department for energy and provides precise definitions of agrivoltaic systems, separating agrivoltaics from advanced agrivoltaics. Agrivoltaic plant is the one which: i) adopts innovative integrative

The Future of Energy Storage

Wednesday, 29 June 2022 by
In May 2022 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published the report “The Future of Energy Storage”, founded by The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and The Heising-Simons Foundation.Energy storage enables cost-effective deep decarbonization of electric power systems with high wind and solar penetration. Deep decarbonization will require massive investments in multiple energy storage technologies, as well

“It’s now or never” is the succintest way to abbreviate the latest warning from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).  If the world is going to avoid the worst of the climate crisis, climate mitigation needs to happen now and with greater impact.  Specifically the world needs to reduce global carbon emissions by 2025
Airborne wind energy (AWE) is “the conversion of wind energy into electricity using tethered flying devices”. The research began in 1980, in 40 years interest and investment in AWE have grown substantially, especially in the last decade, with approximately 70 active research entities including over 20 technology developers globally.  Research found “potential for, and technical viability of,

An increasing number of countries aim to replace polluting conventional generators with clean renewables. It is expected that this would lead to solar and wind production covering almost 80% of the total generation. The change in the electric system going from dispatchable conventional generators to renewables production will require investments and support from TSOs, market

Energy storage is going to be one of the most important technologies in the shift toward clean energy systems.   Because solar panels and wind turbines don´t operate continuously due to the intermittency of solar radiation and wind currents, the owner of these projects are forced to sell the electricity when these resources are available, and
Massive amounts of new wind and solar will be a make-or-break ingredient of a net-zero grid. Solar power generated less than 4 percent of the world’s electricity in 2021; by 2050, solar’s share needs to jump to 33 percent. Wind power produced less than 7 percent of electricity globally last year; by 2050, that needs to grow to 35 percent. So said the International Energy Agency last year when it laid
Italian renewable energy associations ANIE Rinnovabili, Italia Solare, and Elettricità Futura have released a joint position paper defining a series of standards for agrivoltaics projects. A document compiled by three Italian renewables associations identifies with extreme precision the area that is allowed to be used for power generation in the two most common agrivoltaics configurations — solar arrays with elevated

In an effort to combat global warming, wind turbines are on the rise. In order to make wind energy more efficient, turbine size is increasing. Wind energy is the cleanest form of energy, but there is a problem. The potential energy from wind is lost due to various technical issues – such as cracks, lightning
Renewables on the rise: + 70% compared to 2020 with 1,397 MW. It is essential to accelerate to reach the 2030 goals.  According to the RES Observatory created by ANIE Rinnovabili, an association of ANIE Federation, based on the data from Terna of 2021 there is a cumulative total of 1,376 MW of renewables divided
Companies should now develop strategies on how to switch to renewable energies through Power Purchase Agreements. Key facts If you want to operate sustainably, you should deal intensively with how the future energy supply can be secured. To this end, companies should start in good time to set up an appropriate procurement strategy that takes

The infrastructure plan of the Italian Transmission System Operator will contribute to the green transition, with more than 30 electricity connections. The investments aim to strengthen the grid, avoid bottlenecks, and ensure the security of supply.    The South part of the country, where is the greatest production of green electricity, also suffers from diffused
The cost of electricity in Italy has never been higher. This is what emerges from the data published by Arera, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks, and the Environment. In the first weeks of 2022, the Italian energy prices per MWh had an average of 216,35 €.   According to the same authority, the price is composed of 80.8% of energy, 8.4% of transportation and meter, and 10,8% taxes, while the system fees have been deducted from the government for the last quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022.    The main driver of such a huge increase is found in the cost of energy: in the last period, from the third to the fourth quarter of 2021, the price went from

Thermal Energy Storage Technologies

Monday, 06 December 2021 by
One of the greatest barriers to the green energy transition is storing surplus power generation from renewables. Many technologies are capable of this, and many others are coming into the market as well. In the figure below is possible to have an overview of the whole spectrum of storage technologies.   Figure 1: Energy Storage Technologies (source)  A type of technology that has not been already exploited much consists of thermal energy storage. The plants that go under that category have very high energy and power capacities, allowing them to contribute significantly to a cleaner electricity mix.  In fact, due to the increasing need of storing excess electricity from renewable sources, scalable and high efficient solutions have a big potential in the future.  Thermal energy storage can store energy in form of heat thanks to an electricity-to-heat system, like a heat pump, for periods of

The Irish Energy Roadmap Towards 2030

Wednesday, 01 December 2021 by
Ireland’s energy roadmap goal is to produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, in line with the direction given by the Government’s Climate Action Plan (2019).   This change will need a huge increase of clean energy sources, with at least 10 GW of new projects to be carried on, if not more. This goal will be achieved by increasing the penetration level of weather-dependent renewables like solar and wind. The
An astonishing 82% decrease in the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy since 2010 has given the world a fighting chance to build a zero-emissions energy system which might be less costly than the fossil-fuelled system it replaces. The International Energy Agency projects that PV solar generating capacity must grow ten-fold by 2040 if we are to meet the dual tasks
